A group of educators encouraged President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. to increase teachers’ wages a priority in the face of rising inflation and oil prices.

The Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) Philippines urged the new administration to fulfill President Duterte’s “failed wage hike promise.”

Basilio noted that the economic hardships of teachers “stem from the very basic problem of low salaries.”

“It’s well-known how teachers struggle to feed their families and shoulder the costs of education even before the pandemic hits,” he said.

He went on to say that teachers had “long endured the effects of insufficient government support and rising prices of products and commodities, which only intensified under the health and socioeconomic crises.”

The group said that Duterte’s campaign promises include doubling teachers’ salaries — which he “repeated several times after being elected in office.”

However, according to the group, the Salary Standardization Law (SSL) V only quadrupled the pay of cops and military to at least P29,668, while teachers only received a P1,500 annual raise.

According to them, nurses, on the other hand, won a favorable Supreme Court verdict in 2019 that increased their entry-level compensation to salary grade 15, bringing their monthly income to P33,575 in 2021.

Teachers will be paid only Php23,877 per month in 2021, according to the group, “essentially leaving them behind.”

Meanwhile, ACT has encouraged the Department of Education (DepEd) to demand a “long overdue” wage raise for almost a million of the department’s employees.

“Teachers deserve decent pay,” Basilio said. “We call on the government to finally upgrade teachers’ salaries to salary grade 15,” he added.
