Give DepEd another P100B we’ll solve PH education problems- Sara

The Philippines’ basic education issues will be solved in six years if the Department of Education (DepEd) receives the additional P100 billion requested in its projected 2023 budget. Vice President Sara Duterte, who also serves as the head of DepEd, made the daring statement on Wednesday when presenting the department’s proposed budget for 2023 to the House appropriations committee. In the National Expenditure Program for 2023, P710 billion is set out for the DepEd. The amount is on top of the P100 billion sought by Duterte. Duterte was answering to queries from ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro regarding the DepEd’s plans to fix the poor math, reading, and science comprehension skills of Filipino pupils.
Castro further questioned the DepEd’s decision to prioritize the restoration of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps over efforts to address basic educational issues.
The minority in the House has decided that only three members will interject, and the rest, including myself, have waived our right to do so during this budget hearing out of respect and courtesy to the Vice President and the concurrent Secretary of Education, said House Senior Deputy Minority Leader Paul Daza.
The committee earlier ended the discussion on the planned 2023 budget for the Office of the Vice President in less than seven minutes, in spite of inquiries from the minority.

VP Sara said, “if the DepEd is given the budget that it is requesting, we will be able to open more programs to address the learning problems of our students. So initially po, lumapit na kami sa Pangulo at sinabihan ko po ang Pangulo na if you give me P100 billion, I will solve all the problems of basic education.”
